Finding Time to Exercise

I had a few requests on my Facebook Page to talk about time management as it relates to your health and fitness.  Having personally struggled in the past in this area, I wanted to share with you a few tips that you that you can use to start managing your time better.

Stop Saying and Start Planning

If I had a dollar for every time I told myself “Oh, I’ll take care of that tomorrow” but then I didn’t follow through, I wouldn’t know what to do with all that money.  Many people take the time to think about what they are going to do, but they don’t take the time to make it a tangible plan.

The next time you are thinking about working out tomorrow, pull out your calendar or your smart phone and create an entry in writing.  Set an alarm on your phone to remind you to workout.  You know what your day will hold in most cases, so plan around it and make your workout a priority!

Plan Your Meals in Advance

When I first started planning out my meals it was a complete nightmare.  The first week took me about 2 hours and then another 2 hours at the grocery store!  But over time I have gotten much better, I have found systems that work for me and know I can plan out the week and get all of my shopping done in just a couple of hours!

Most of the time we don’t eat right because we don’t know what we are going to eat so we have to plan our meals on the fly.  When you plan out your weekly meal in advance, you already know what you are going to eat and when, the guesswork is gone!

I know I use this one all the time, but it’s because I truly believe it: “He who fails to plan, plans to fail”

Make a To Do List

I put up so much resistance to a to do list, and I honestly don’t know why, as soon as I started writing out what I had to do, I quickly realized I didn’t have as much on my plate as I thought!

By writing down the stuff that HAD to get done today on one list and putting my weekly stuff on another list, I found that today was not as overwhelming as I thought.  A to do list also allow you to develop your planning mentality.  Writing it down helps to reinforce it, so make sure that you put your workout and your meal planning on your list!

Do a Time Check

The last point that I want to make is that you need to do a time check!  Find out what you are really spending your time on and see if you could make some changes for the better.  I could easily spend the length of my workout watching TV or surfing Facebook, but that doesn’t really do anything for me now does it?

Check what you are doing with your day and see if you can cut out some of the stuff that isn’t giving you any benefit.

Comment below with what you think is your biggest time waster is and what you plan to do to cut it out of your day.

Thanks for the great tips Zach. I love my to do list and couldn’t live without it. It really keeps me focused. And I’m with you on the meal planning too. If I don’t plan my meals out, I’m all over the place. It makes life so much easier knowing what I need to buy and cook. Great tips. Thanks. Lisa
